We had an
elegant wall clock in the foyer of our home. It was one of those
pretty brass-and-glass numbers, with lilies etched into the glass.
After many years, it stopped keeping time; nevertheless, we were able to
sell it at a garage sale for about five bucks. I wanted to replace the
clock ... and what better way than to create one? I did the painting
and Leo installed the battery-operated clock-works. In this painting,
everyone gets a chance to pitch in ... the fellow installing the numbers ...
the other guy painting his ladder ... and the little kid painting the yellow
ladder. Even the passing cat had a share in the creativity!

Unfortunately, I didn't photograph the original scribbles that I made to
start this off. The painting is on wood instead of canvas, because
it's more advisable to drill a hole into wood than it is into canvas! |

|
Step One
I gave the wood a single primer coat and drew my idea onto it.
Then I started to paint some bricks - which I love to do. |

|
Step Two
Started to block in
the ladders, the fellas, the kid and the cat! |

|
Step Three
A little more
detail here and there ... some shadows, and got the fella to hold the
number "8" in place. |

|
Step Four
Jazzed up the round
background for the working clock ... Deepened the shadows a bit, added
some weeds to the sidewalk, gave the cat his stripes - and even SIGNED
the painting! |

|
Step Five
Placed the real
numbers onto the clock ... and installed the clock-works. Now this
clock hangs in the foyer of our home - this is much more "my speed" than
the elegant glass-and-brass clock. |
