When my
children's book manuscript, Vivian Untangled, was accepted for publication -
I was ecstatic! Then the question of the book cover came up. I asked
the publisher (Napoleon Publishing) if I could submit my idea for the book
cover. Publishers usually choose their own illustrators, but I was
given permission to "take a stab at it" - with the understanding that if
it's not suitable, the publisher will hand the task over to a professional
illustrator. Guess what happened next?
Vivian Untangled - Book Cover Illustration

|
Step One
My initial sketch ... |

|
Step Two
Blocking in shapes and colours -
I know this will be a daunting task. |

|
Step Three
Grandpa's lookin'
good, but the kid looks too scared. I'm not keen on the shade of
yellow on the walls ... needs a ton of work. |

|
Step Four
Holy smokes!
I have to get a chess game going here ... and have to make sure the
pieces are logically placed - you know, there can't be two bishops on
the same colour, and the like. Lots of colour adjustments here. |

|
Step Five
I got the wall
colour toned down a bit and worked on some of the teeny little details
... even whooshed a bit of snow onto the window ledge. |

|
Step Six
More subtle
changes. Notice that there's a wooden box for the chess pieces. |

|
Step Seven
There were many
in-between steps that haven't been recorded here ... but to make a long
story short, my illustration was accepted - it's my book cover!
